The four principle clair senses.
The four primary clairs are psychic senses that extend beyond the five physical senses of sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing. They are extrasensory, which enables us to perceive information or phenomena that cannot be explained by ordinary sensory perception. The clairs are psychic modalities or intuitive abilities and they consist of -clairvoyance (clear seeing), clairaudience (clear hearing), clairsentience (clear feeling), and claircognizance (clear knowing). These represent different ways individuals can develop their spiritual intuition and receive information beyond the physical senses. Otherwise known as spirit communication, mediumship or having psychic abilities.
Clairvoyance-clear seeing.
The ability to "see" images, visions, or symbols related to past, present, or future events, often occurs through the third eye chakra. This psychic gift of 'clear seeing' enables us to perceive information or events through clear mental images or visions. Clairvoyants can 'see' or visualise in their mind's eye people, places, or objects that are beyond their immediate physical surroundings. It can look like a flash of a mental image or scene and is often symbolic or metaphorical. Perhaps you meet up with a friend and as you say hello you see a mental image of them standing in the rain, crying. You would know that something must be bothering them and they are feeling very emotional.
Clairaudience-clear hearing.
The ability to hear voices, sounds, or messages from the spiritual realm or one's own intuition. Clear hearing is the ability to receive information through auditory perception. Those with strong clairaudience may hear sounds, voices, or messages from sources that are discarnate beings-not physically present. These voices are heard through the inner ear, and are distinct and distinguishable from our own internal narrator. Clairaudient messages sound like someone talking in your mind. This voice will never be harsh or tormenting. The tone of this voice is almost always the same, even and calm.
Clairsentience-clear feeling.
The ability to feel emotions, energies, or sensations that relate to other people or situations. The gift of 'clear feeling' is the psychic ability to sense or feel information on an emotional or energetic level that does not belong to your own physical presence. Clairsentients can pick up on the emotions, energy, or vibrations of people, places, or objects. They are often called empaths. Clairsentient messages come through as a feeling, gut instincts, being able to read the emotions of others, or sensing the collective energy of a room all fall under this umbrella. Clairsentience is the most common of the four clairs.
Claircognizance-clear knowing.
Claircognizance refers to the intuitive ability to know or sense something without any known sensory input or reasoning, often described as "clear knowing" or "gut feeling". It's a form of psychic perception where an individual gains knowledge without knowing how they acquired it. Claircognizants may have a strong sense of knowing or understanding without being able to explain how they arrived at that knowledge. Claircognizance involves thoughts that seem to just drop into your head. Unlike clairaudience, you don't actually hear them. Suddenly, you just know. Many people call these bursts of intuition "downloads" because of the way they seem to just appear in the mind, as if from somewhere else. Claircognizance happens whenever you feel some instantaneous insight or knowledge about yourself, another person, a particular situation.
The Other Clairs
Clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience and claircognizance are widely accepted as the four principle psychic gifts. However, they are by no means the only ones. We are each unique and we receive psychic information differently. Even if our predominant clair is one of the main psychic senses listed above, we will receive the information in our own way. Just because one person is clairvoyant doesn't mean they will see information in the same way as another clairvoyant. Similarly, just because your psychic gift doesn't correspond to the main four listed above does not mean it's not valid. If the main four clairs do not quite match with your experience, it may be that you have a different clair. There are many more than just four! Clairgustance-clear tasting.
Clairgustance refers to the ability to taste flavors that are not physically present, also known as "clear tasting". It's a form of extrasensory perception where someone might taste something without actually having ingested it. Someone might suddenly taste chocolate during a past life reading or perceive the flavor of a specific food associated with a deceased loved one. Those who possess this ability are able to perceive the essence of a substance from the spiritual or ethereal realms through taste.
Clairalience or clairolfaction-clear smelling.
Clairolfaction, also referred to by the terms clairolfactance, clairosmesis, clear smelling, psychic smelling, psychic scent, or olfactory mediumship, is an intuitive, extra-sensory gift that utilizes the perception of scents, that are not physically present, to receive messages from spirit guides and other spiritual beings.
Automatic writing.
Automatic writing is a technique where a person produces written words without conscious, deliberate control or thought. It can be practiced in various contexts, including spiritual practices, artistic expression, and as a method of exploring the subconscious.
Divination: In spiritualism automatic writing is used as a means of channeling messages from spirits or higher entities. Practitioners believe that the hand is guided by an external force, allowing the transmission of messages without conscious effort.
Communication with spirit :Some believe automatic writing can be a way to communicate with deceased loved ones or to gain insights into the spirit world.
Psychographic Divination: "psychography," a term sometimes used interchangeably with automatic writing, especially when referring to the spiritual aspects.
Self-Exploration: Some individuals use automatic writing as a method of self-exploration and journaling, allowing their subconscious to reveal thoughts and feelings that might not otherwise be consciously accessed.
Uncensored Expression:Automatic writing is seen as a way to bypass conscious thought and allow the unconscious to express itself freely, leading to unexpected and potentially unconventional creations.
Surrealism and psychic Automatistic Art.
Artists, particularly those associated with Surrealism, embraced automatic writing as a method of tapping into the subconscious mind and creating spontaneous, unfiltered art.
Dadaism:The Tate website states that Dadaists also experimented with automatic writing as a way to disrupt traditional artistic forms and create work based on chance and spontaneity.
In art, automatism is a creative process where artistic creation happens without conscious thought, relying on the unconscious mind and spontaneous movements. It's about suppressing rational control and allowing the subconscious to dictate the work, as seen in techniques like automatic writing, drawing, or painting. This method is often associated with Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, where artists explore the depths of the unconscious through art.
Automatism was not invented by the Surrealists. Automatic writing was a technique traditionally used by mediums and spiritualists who would put themselves into a trance-like state in order to receive dictation from the spirit world. Artists have experimented with automatic drawing and painting.
For the surrealists, receptivity to the internal unconscious was the motivating factor. For spiritualists, the driving force was access to the spirit world. Artists aim to be open to internal, unconscious, forces as well as external spiritual ones.
The word ‘mantic’ to describe automatic art derived from ancient Greek, refers to oracular pronouncements arising from divine possession. The act of painting, therefore, becomes an act of divination that connects the artist to natural and spiritual forces. Automatic paintings reveal the interconnectedness of the inner and outer worlds, the subject and the object, the I and the Other.
